Strengthening decent work through systems change

In 2025, Charles Sturt received two SAGE Cygnet Awards recognising its sustained, evidence-based commitment to advancing gender equity in academic promotions and strengthening workplace accessibility for staff with disability, chronic health conditions and neurodivergence.

A comprehensive review of academic promotion processes identified barriers disproportionately affecting women. In response, the university implemented clearer guidelines, improved resources and support, and enhanced training in equal opportunity principles for the promotion committee. These updates led to more transparent and consistent assessments, improved gender equity in promotion outcomes, and increased staff confidence in the process.

The university also refined its approach to workplace adjustments to better support staff with accessibility requirements. These improvements resulted in greater awareness of available support, more consistent staff experiences, and stronger feelings of belonging and inclusion.

These awards reflect the practical action to address structural barriers to progression and participation, to support a diverse workforce, and to make Charles Sturt an inclusive and equitable workplace.
