Supporting healthy ageing in regional communities

Older people living in regional and rural communities can face increased risks to physical, cognitive and social wellbeing, particularly where access to services is limited. Supporting healthy ageing within community settings is essential to maintaining independence and quality of life.

Charles Sturt supported the Wellness 2 Age program, an evidence-based initiative created by registered allied health professionals Dr Kristy Robson and Associate Professor Melissa Nott from the Three Rivers Department of Rural Health. Delivered over 10 weeks, the program uses a person-centred, dual tasking approach that integrates physical and cognitive activities within a group setting. Weekly sessions are designed to strengthen mobility, balance, planning, attention and memory, with strategies that translate into everyday activities at home and in the community. Program outcomes are assessed at the beginning and end of delivery.

The project provides accessible infrastructure that supports physical, cognitive and social wellbeing for older people, contributing to healthier ageing in regional communities
