Unique Student Identifier (USI)

Your Unique Student Identifier (USI) is your personal education number required for all nationally recognised study, including university and vocational education and training (VET). It’s free to create and stays with you for life.

Why you need a USI

You must have a USI if you are:

  • studying a Commonwealth supported place (CSP)
  • applying for HECS-HELP, FEE-HELP, OS-HELP or SA-HELP
  • finishing a course that leads to a recognised qualification

If you do not provide your USI it may delay or affect your enrolment. Without a USI, we can't complete your enrolment, process any loans, or issue your degree.

You don't need a USI if you're an international offshore student.

You will already have a USI if you have studied any nationally recognised VET (Vocational Education and Training) since 2015, or a higher education course from 2023 onwards.

You can look it up at the USI website.

How to get your USI

If you don’t have a USI, follow these steps to get one:

  1. Go to the USI website
  2. Select ‘Create your USI’
  3. Follow the steps and provide a valid form of ID (like your passport or driver licence)
  4. You’ll get your USI by email almost instantly.

Add your USI to your Charles Sturt record

If you haven't already, you can add your USI to your student profile.

Once you've provided your USI it will be visible in the Student Portal. Simply click your name in the top right hand corner and your USI will be listed under "My Profile".
