Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

As of 2025, academic staff in continuing or fixed-term roles are no longer required to complete the Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education as part of their probation requirements. This change has led to the decision to discontinue the course.

The probationary requirement for academic staff new to the university is participation in the Foundations of Learning and Teaching @CS program.

The course will be fully discontinued and no longer available from the beginning of 2027.

Current Students

The course is currently in a “teach-out” phase and will remain available until the end of 2026.

Yes. Students who are currently enrolled or have completed some units are eligible to complete the course within the designated teach-out period.

If you are unable to complete the course by the end of 2026, you may be offered alternative options, such as transferring to a similar program or receiving credit for completed units. Please contact the Course Director on GCLTHE@csu.edu.au to discuss your individual circumstances.

Prospective or Returning Students

New enrolments are not being accepted following the course’s discontinuation. However, returning students may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Please contact the Course Director on GCLTHE@csu.edu.au for further information.

Application for Re-admission to the same course

It may be possible to re-enrol and complete your remaining units, provided you meet eligibility requirements and the course is still within the teach-out period. Please consult the Course Director to explore your options at GCLTHE@csu.edu.au.

Staff and Alumni

Unfortunately, this course is only available to current staff members of Charles Sturt University.

Yes. Qualifications awarded from discontinued courses remain valid and fully recognised, provided they are completed within the approved timeframe.

Support and Alternatives

Yes. The university may offer similar programs or pathways that align with your academic goals. You may also be eligible for credit transfer based on the units you have completed.  To discuss your options, please contact the Course Director at GCLTHE@csu.edu.au.

This is for teaching staff in the School of Policing Studies (SoPS) only. If you are looking for training as a condition of probation, please see Foundations of Learning and Teaching at Charles Sturt.

This formal qualification:

  • helps staff support student learning specifically in higher education
  • is aligned with the UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF) and the Australian University Teaching Standards (Universities Australia).

The course structure recognises the diverse needs of staff for academic probation and continuing professional development.

The course is fee-free for all Charles Sturt academics and staff who support student learning.

Applying for exemption

If you can demonstrate equivalence via transcripts, certificates and a subject outline from a previous university, you may be exempt from the probation subject.

Staff from the School of Policing Studies (SOPS)

As part of academic probation, all commencing School of Policing Studies Academics must undertake the following:

Year one

  • EEL409 Developing as a Police Educator
  • EEL416 Learning and Teaching in a Policing Contexts

These subjects are consecutive with one being undertaken per session.

Year two

  • EEL521 Scholarly Teaching and Learning (Session 1)
  • EEL523 Enhancing the Skilful Higher Education Teacher (Session 2)

How to apply

You must enrol in the complete course for your fees to be waived. Although we encourage academics to complete the full course, you can withdraw from the course after you have completed your probationary subjects if you choose.

As a full award course, admission follows the same process as all course enrolments at Charles Sturt. You will be a student of Charles Sturt, so you will also need to complete the Academic Integrity subject for students (in addition to the staff facing  Academic Integrity ELMO)

You must also complete the GCLTHE Application for Admission Supplementary Form.
