Assessing teaching and learning in times of disruption: A School of Education symposium

We are living and working in a time of polycrisis – a time where many crises intersect and implicate each other in surprising and non-linear ways. In initial teacher education, we are teaching teachers skills and knowledge that will help them navigate classrooms where increased (environmental, social, economic) uncertainty, diversity, and influence of rapidly advancing technology make for complex learning environments. Aside from the academic integrity challenges that technology such as generative AI is posing to conventional modes of assessment in higher education, there are greater concerns regarding the development of professional knowledge and engaging students in assessment that sustains their professional learning. In this, the third Roadshow of the Schools and Centres, the School of Education will explore this time of disruption as an opportunity to rethink assessment in initial teacher education.

Dr Natalie Thompson – Polycrisis, professional knowledge, and genAI: implications and opportunities This presentation explores the emerging body of literature in relation to genAI and initial teacher education to think through how students are using genAI in their degrees and what it means for a profession already under pressure.

Dr Sarah-Jane Lord – Disruption as an opportunity to reimagine assessment This presentation probes the purpose of assessment and explores alternative assessment practices that promote authentic learning and student engagement.

Dr Lysa Dealtry and Dr Tace Vigliante – Community-based placements as authentic assessment This presentation shares insights from the development of a community engagement project in initial teacher education and how this responds to the competing demands of community engagement, authentic learning, the development of professional knowledge and innovative assessment practices. Teacher education students' reflections on their placement experiences will be presented as critical to bridging theory and practice and as a valuable source of evidence of transformative learning.
