Alternative arrangements for supervised oral assessment

Charles Sturt University is strengthening assessment practices through the introduction of supervised assessment across coursework subjects.

As part of this, some subjects may use supervised oral assessment formats, such as professional conversations, viva-style discussions, or other real-time demonstrations of learning.

In line with legislative obligations and existing assessment policy, the university has developed the following guidance to support appropriate alternative arrangements for supervised oral assessment where required.

The university’s assessment policies already support reasonable adjustments and alternative arrangements for students with disability to ensure equitable access to study. These adjustments are implemented through Accessibility and Inclusion Support and documented in a student’s Study Access Plan.

The guidance document below outlines examples of alternative arrangements that may be considered for supervised oral assessment where a student has an approved Study Access Plan.

These arrangements aim to:

  • support equitable participation for students with disability
  • maintain alignment with subject and course learning outcomes
  • preserve the validity and reliability of assessment decisions

The guidance distinguishes between minor adjustments, which can be approved through Accessibility and Inclusion processes, and major alternative arrangements, which require academic approval.

This guidance is being used on a pilot basis while the university undertakes a scheduled review of the Assessment Policy suite.
