First Nations Cultural Innovation and Technology Program

The First Nations Cultural Innovation and Technology program explores how First Nations thinking is applied to the co-design of new technologies.

The First Nations Cultural Innovation and Technology program at the AI and Cyber Futures Institute is dedicated to exploring the integration of First Nations perspectives into the co-design and co-creation of emerging technologies. This program emphasises the importance of a collaborative approach that respects and incorporates First Nations thinking, providing a deep dive into the methodologies and practices essential for culturally informed technology development.

Our focus spans both research and education, aiming to impart comprehensive knowledge on the application of a Country-centric approach. This framework is vital for maintaining the integrity and sovereignty of Indigenous data, ensuring that the cultural and intellectual property rights of First Nations peoples are safeguarded throughout the technological development process.

We welcome a diverse group of collaborators and participants, including researchers, industry professionals, students, and other stakeholders from fields such as cultural heritage management, preservation, beauty, fashion, entrepreneurship, and those interested in First Nations philosophies. Our program is designed to be an inclusive research and educational experience that fosters meaningful engagement and collaboration with First Nations communities and partners. Our goal is to empower communities, businesses, and other stakeholders across Australia and beyond with practical strategies for integrating Indigenous Data Sovereignty principles into their projects and enterprises, enriching their professional practices and contributions to their respective fields and industries.
