Setting up video assignments in Panopto

This article details the use of Panopto for video assignments within Brightspace subject sites. It covers the process of setting up video assignments for your students.

This process automatically creates assignment folders for the subject site (session site) when they are provisioned four weeks before session starts. When the first student submits their video assessment, Panopto automatically places these in a ‘Student Submissions’ folder.

Every video submission for every assignment in the subject site will be located in this folder. Therefore, naming conventions for submissions such as Ax#_Assessment Name_Student Name/ID are imperative when multiple assignment will use this process.

Staff are required to access Panopto once for the subject each session via the 'My Subject > CSU Replay' to gain access to all student submissions for each new subject they visit. The assignment folder can still be renamed without causing issues. Though using a descriptive name to locate it in future is recommended.

Students can submit Panopto video assignments directly into any Brightspace assignment text field using the 'Insert stuff > Panopto Student Submission' extension. This load the correct location for submissions by default, reducing the chances the submissions are uploaded to an incorrect folder and allows videos to show alongside the marking rubric window without requiring a second tab or window to open the video.

Notes:

How video assignment folders work

  • Privacy: Submissions are by default private and can only be viewed by the original submitter and instructors.
  • Editing restrictions: Once your video is submitted, it is moved to the 'Student Submissions' assignment subfolder. You can view your submitted video or copy it to another folder, but you cannot edit or delete it after submission.

Important tips

  • The ‘Text Submission’ is a misnomer, as this is where the video should be embedded if no other files are required. If other files are required, the Panopto video embed area will be the ‘Comments’ section.
  • Videos do not need to finish processing before they are submitted, allowing you to complete the submission process without waiting. However, it is always recommended videos are watched back to ensure the audio and video are working as intended.
  • If you want to edit your video, you must do so before finalising your submission. If you need to make changes, cancel the submission process, go to My Subject > CSU Replay (Panopto) to edit your video, and then restart the submission process and in Step 5, use the Choose option to select an existing video.
